U.S. is a country with 50 states and each state is self-governed. Each state has elected assemblies and laws. The ruler of each state is called the governor and is elected directly by the people. Foreign policy and other things that are common to the entire United States is handled by the federal government in Washington.
U.S. has a legislative assembly called Congress. Congress consists of Senate and House of Representatives. The Senate has two members from each state. In the House of Representatives every state has members in proportion to population. The president is elected independently of Congress, and he chooses his staff and ministers also independent of Congress. U.S. has not a parliamentary system but a power-sharing system. The president governs, Congress enacts laws and the Supreme Court oversees law and justice.
In the U.S., there are two major parties called the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. But there are also three other major parties and their names are: Green Party of the United States, Constitution Party and Libertarian Party.
